Advancing Policies and Investments

There are several groups that advance policies and investment change in the WIN Network, the Policies and Investment Cooperative and the Well Being Alliance. Both of their efforts are described below.

The WIN Policies and Investment Cooperative focuses on:

1) dismantling harmful policies and investments that create harm

2) advancing policies and investments that create well-being and equity.

We do this both through our own efforts and in solidarity with the efforts of others, both in the WIN Network and beyond. There are several areas of strategic focus in our work:

1)  MENTAL HEALTH and WELL BEING - Healing in the Nation

Led by Well Being Trust, Healing in the Nation is a national blueprint for mental health and well-being  that addresses the epidemic of diseases and deaths of despair. In the context of COVID-19, this has led to a number of national partners adopting a Framework for Excellence in Mental Health.

The Well Being Alliance has come together to advocate for community mental health workers as part of a COVID recovery and resilience strategy.

2)  EQUITABLE ECONOMIES

The work of the Equitable Economies Cooperative is to develop and advance a policy agenda to create an equitable economy that contributes to improving health, wellbeing and equity. The Equitable Economies Cooperative is developing a policy agenda to create an equitable economy that improves health, wellbeing, and equity.

Why is an Equitable, Well-being Economy Needed? There are racial, place, and class-based wealth and health gaps in our economy:

  • Racism and other discrimination causes inequalities in opportunities for people of color, women and others.

  • Where you live affects your access to education, jobs, and other factors that support your wellbeing.

  • These inequities play a role in shaping the economy, society, and opportunity.

A more equitable economy will improve health and wellbeing for all. It will ensure that all people have just opportunities for a fulfilling life over generations.

What is an Equitable, Well-being Economy?

An equitable well-being economy is a living system. It rests on the basic goal of all people and places thriving together--with no exceptions. It is an economy that is just, regenerative, multiracial. It values all stakeholder interests. An equitable economy rebalances power. It provides what everyone needs to participate, prosper, and reach their full potential. A well-being economy provides opportunity for freedom, voice, power, ownership. It leads to a fulfilling life over generations for everyone. An economy that addresses inequities due to racism, colonialism and other discrimination creates the conditions for everyone to thrive together.

Equitable Economies Impact Areas

There are policies that have the potential to bring us closer to a well-being economy for all. We’ve organized into the following “impact areas”:

  • Access to good jobs

  • Job quality

  • Human development, education, & training

  • Economic security to meet basic needs for life, health, & safety

  • Access and effectiveness of social services

  • Asset and wealth building

  • Equitable businesses

  • Equitable economic & community development

  • Reparations for historical inequities

  • Tax reform

  • Economic democracy

3)  RACIAL JUSTICE

WIN recognizes that the current crisis of police violence and COVID-19 inequities are the latest in a centuries-long history of racial injustice in this country. WIN stands in solidarity with those who have been leading the movements for Black, Latinx, indigenous, migrant and other lives of communities of color for decades.  We are working with these communities to:

  1. dismantle oppressive policies of structural racism; and

  2. create the conditions for racial equity and justice

We also educate communities about policies and investments that might impact their lives and work.  Some recent examples are noted below.
